If you receive a "Required to Withdraw" (RTW) letter from your Faculty, what do you do next?

Step 1 - Review your "Required to Withdraw" letter to determine your options

When you have been required to withdraw, your Faculty determines the options available to you:

  • If the Fresh Start Program was listed as an option in your letter, register for a Fresh Start Intake Session; see Step 2 below.
  • If you decide not to enter the Fresh Start Program, review other options available to you and consider these alternatives. Contact your Faculty for further information.
  • If the Fresh Start Program was not listed as an option in your letter, review other options available to you and consider these alternatives. Contact your Faculty for further information.

Please note:

  • If you are appealing any of your grades or your academic standing, DO NOT wait until the appeal process is complete to apply to the Fresh Start Program. You should apply to the Fresh Start Program as soon as you receive your “Required to Withdraw” letter, even if you are appealing one or more of your grades. It take time for appeal meetings to be scheduled and to receive the appeal decision. If your appeal(s) is successful, you can then withdraw from the Fresh Start Program. Registering for Fresh Start now — while you also go through the appeal process — keeps your options open by ensuring that you do not miss the Fresh Start Program application deadline (in late July). For information on and assistance with the appeal process, contact the Office of the Student Ombuds.
  • If you are interested in the Fresh Start Program, but may not be able to start in September, you should still apply to the Fresh Start Program as soon as you receive your “Required to Withdraw” letter. If you wish to delay your start date for Fresh Start, you may delay for one year (i.e., to start the next September) one time only. Please Note: you MUST discuss this option with and receive approval from the Faculty from which you received your “Required to Withdraw” letter.

Step 2 - Register for a Fresh Start Intake Session

Fresh Start Intake Sessions are held by Student Success Centre; to register for an Intake Session, visit our registration website and follow the steps to complete your registration.

Please register for your Intake Session as soon as possible as space is limited. Students who delay their registration will have fewer available options for their Intake Session time and credit course selection. Please Note: A $50 deposit towards your “Fresh Start Cognitive Strategies” Online Course will be required when you register for your Intake Session. If you decide not to participate in the program, a refund will be processed.

If you are outside of Alberta/Canada, telephone or Skype intake sessions can be arranged (with limited availability). Students must cover any costs associated with their participation in a Fresh Start Program Intake Session. Contact the Student Success Centre as soon as possible to make arrangements.

PLEASE NOTE: Students must complete an Intake Session for the Fresh Start Program by FRIDAY, JULY 28, 2017.

Step 3 - Prepare for Your Fresh Start Intake Session

To prepare for your Fresh Start Intake Session, you will complete the Fresh Start Intake Session Online Form and read the Fresh Start Guidelines.

  • Complete the Fresh Start Intake Online Form: After registering for your Fresh Start Intake Session, you will receive an email with details for completing the Fresh Start Intake Online Form. You must complete this form before you attend your Intake Session.
  • Read the Fresh Start Program Guidelines: After registering for your Fresh Start Intake Session, you will be able to download the Fresh Start Program Guidelines from your account. You must read this guidelines before you attend your Intake Session.


The Fresh Start Intake Online Form asks questions about you and your educational background. This information will be used to assess your suitability for the Fresh Start Program and to help us identify resources that may be of assistance to you. 

Please note: 

  • You do not need any special materials to answer the form, but please allow 15-20 minutes to complete the form.
  • The personal information you provide on the form remains confidential. 
  • Once you complete and submit the form, you will not be able to access it again.

Step 4 - Attend Your Fresh Start Intake Session

Please allow up to two hours to complete the Intake Session and related documents. 

At your Intake Session, the Fresh Start Advisor (or designate) will review information about Fresh Start Program policies, procedures, and requirements. You will receive an information package about the program and complete several forms as part of the session, including:

  • the Fresh Start Program agreement;
  • a writing sample; and,
  • an Internal Transfer to Open Studies application.

Step 5 - Register in the Fresh Start Cognitive Strategies Online Course

Once you have completed your Fresh Start Program Intake Session, you must complete your registration in the Fresh Start Cognitive Strategies online course:

  • The registration fee for the Fresh Start Cognitive Strategies course for Fall 2017 is $500 ($50 Credit from Intake Session registration). Students MUST register for the course by Friday, July 28, 2017. 
  • Complete registration details are included in the Intake Session package.

Step 6 - Submit Your Open Studies Application

Once you have completed the documentation given during your Intake Session, you will continue your studies on campus for the Fall/Winter terms while registered in Open Studies. You MUST apply to the Open Studies Fresh Start Program. You will complete an internal Transfer to Open Studies application at your Intake Session, and your application will be signed by the Fresh Start Advisor (or designate):

  • Students MUST submit their completed application to the Registrar’s Office by Friday, July 28, 2017. We strongly recommend that you submit your application immediately following your Fresh Start Intake Interview as you cannot register for credit courses until your application has been accepted.
  • Complete registration details are included in the Intake Session package.

Step 7 - Register for Credit Courses

If you are accepted into the Fresh Start Program, you will take a minimum of three (3) or a maximum of four (4) three-credit courses in both of the fall and winter terms (depending upon the Faculty that referred you to the Fresh Start Program):

  • You MUST be accepted into Open Studies before you may register in credit courses. Therefore, the sooner students complete the Fresh Start application process (including the application to Open Studies), the sooner they may register for credit courses.
  • Once your Open Studies acceptance is received, you MUST register for your credit courses.
